The station is equipped with 6 high pressure cylinders filled with reference gases. 3 cylinders were purchased from the GAW Central Calibration Laboraty (CCL) hosted by NOAA ESRL. 3 cylinders were filled at Empa; concentrations of the latter gases were assigned by the World Calibration Centre for Surface Ozone, Carbon Monoxide, Methane and Carbon Dioxide (WCC-Empa). The analyzer is regularly calibrated with four reference gases. All assigned mole fractions are reported on the WMO X2019 scale for CO2, WMO X2014A for CO, and WMO X2004A for CO. Since June 2023, the suite of CO calibration gases includes a tank with CO-free air and a high-level CO tank (about 3 ppm CO). The quality of the calibration is verified with a fifth reference gas (target cylinder). Calibration tanks are measured every 3 to 7 days.
Continuous data are recorded on a central data acquisition computer, which calculates 1-min averages for further processing. 1-min data are visually inspected and screened; R scripts are used to separate ambient air and calibration/target gas data, to apply water vapour correction and calibration functions. Calibration functions are determined by fitting low pass filter through the calibration gas data and calculating the mismatch between the assigned and the recorded values.
Quality assurance procedures involve time series plots, target tank (i.e. cylinders containing natural air with assigned gas mole fractions that are treated as (unknown) sample in a sequence of analyses) measurements, evaluation of the evolution of the instrument sensitivity, and consistency checks. The measurements were made in humid air, and a water vapour correction was applied. See Rella et al. (Rella, C.W., et al., High accuracy measurements of dry mole fractions of carbon dioxide and methane in humid air. Atmos. Meas. Tech., 2013. 6 (3): p. 837-860.) for details of the empirical determination of the correction parameters. Since June 2023, a Nafion dryer is used to dry the sample prior to analysis.
[Hourly] data acquisition records data in 5-sec intervals and aggregates 1-min averages, which are used for further processing. Number of values given in hourly data files refer to the number of available 1-min averages within the respective hour.
A minimum of 15 1-min averages needs to be available to calculate hourly averages; otherwise, hourly data are reported as not available.
[Daily] hourly averages are aggregated to daily means. Thus, the number of detections refers to the number of available hourly averages within the respective day. A minimum of 8 hourly averages needs to be available to calculate daily averages; otherwise, daily data are reported as not available.
[Monthly] daily data are aggregated to monthly means. Thus, the number of detections refers to the number of available daily averages within the respective month. A minimum of 10 daily averages needs to be available to calculate monthly averages; otherwise, monthly data are reported as not available.

 Operational/Reporting
The Cholpon-Ata Lake Observatory is located on the Northern shore of the Issyk Kul lake (a water surface of 180 km x 60 km in size), and is located about 2 km west of Cholpon Ata village (about 12'000 inhabitants); Cholpon-Ata is a resort center of the Issyk-Kul region, there are no industrial enterprises in the city; to its north, a mountain range extends up to an altitude of 4300 m; in spring and autumn, when local activity in the region is low, the location provides ideal conditions to measure background greenhouse gas concentrations representative for a geographically large area; during summer, touristic activity is prevalent, leading to increased traffic and related emissions; in winter, residential heating with coal or wood in the nearby villages can occasionally lead to pollution episodes; the observatory is about 500 m south of the main road along the Northern shore of the lake; traffic is moderate but is more intense in summer during holiday season; the wind regime is characterized by high frequency.

CO2, CO and CH4 observations are performed with a commercially available instrument (Picarro Inc., G2401) based on the Wavelength-Scanned Cavity Ringdown Spectroscopy technique coupled to a custom-built calibration unit. Along with CO2, CO, and CH4, the instrument is also capable to measure CH4, CO and H2O. Thus, the CO2, CO and CH4 data can be corrected for interferences of water vapor. Therefore, no drying is applied prior to analysis and CO2, CO, and CH4 dry air mole fractions are determined by application of an empirical humidity correction to analysis data of the fully unaltered humid gas stream accounting dilution and pressure broadening effects.
inlet system and tubing material: inlet height above ground 10 m and 2 m above the roof; inlet material: Dekabon/Synflex 1/4" OD; total inlet length approx. 8 m; laboratory is located in the first floor the building; flow rate into lab: 5 lpm.

The setup of the station was supported by the Swiss CATCOS (Capacity Building and Twinning for Climate Observing Systems) project. CATCOS was coordinated by the by the Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology MeteoSwiss and financed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) until March 2017. Follow-up funding allowing for reduced continuous for support of the observations was provided by SDC and the GCOS Trust Fund until spring 2021. Remote support is also offered by the WMO/GAW Quality Assurance / Science Activity Centre Switzerland (QA/SAC-CH) hosted by Empa. Local operation is performed by Kyrgyzhydromet staff.
