The CH4 concentration in each flask was determined against our working standard gases calibrated on the Tohoku University scale. The Tohoku University scale is based on primary standard gases prepared with uncertainty of 1 ppb using a gravimetrical method with four dilution stages (Aoki et al., 1992). We confirmed by regularly performing an intercalibration of our standard gases that our scale has been stable within our analytical repeatability for the period covered by the present observation programs. We have participated the WMO Round Robin intercomparison programme. See Umezawa et al. (2014). |

This dataset include a flag for reliability of the sampling position as follows. 0: calculated based on the aircraft indicators and obviously reasonable. 1: same as 0, but obviously unreasonable. 2: interpolated based on the previous/following positions. 3: air-sampling positions were assigned along the reference route connecting Sendai and Fukuoka airports based on the sampling time. 4: Same as 3, but the sampling time was also assumed since the original record was lost. Contact to the contirbutors for more information. |

Air samples were collected on board commercial jet airlines (McDonnell- Douglas MD-80 and MD-90) between Sendai (38.13° N, 140.92° E) and Fukuoka (33.58° N, 130.45° E) airports, which were operated by Japan Air Systems (the former Toa Domestic Airlines) until 2004 and then by Japan Airlines. Outside air, which is introduced into the cockpit through an air-conditioning system of the aircraft, was collected at ~0.3 MPa above the cockpit pressure into a 350 mL stainless-steel flask by using a manual plunger pump developed at Tohoku University. Air sampling positions and altitudes were recorded from flight instruments of the aircraft. During a set of outbound and returning flights, 20 air samples were collected. See Umezawa et al. (2014). | |
