Hierarchy of standards The laboratory primary standard gases are calibrated by WMO reference standard gases. The laboratory secondary standard gases are calibrated by the laboratory primary standard gases. The working standard gases in the station are calibrated by the laboratory secondary standard gases. Frequency of calibration and latest calibration The laboratory primary standard gases are calibrated by WMO reference standard gases at WMO CCL every 2 years. The latest calibration at CCL was performed in December 2010. The laboratory secondary standard gases are calibrated by the laboratory primary standard gases every 6 months. The working standard gases in the station are calibrated by the laboratory secondary standard gases before and after use (period of use is about 6 months). Calibration history Calibration date (Calibration standard) 1st generation Oct. 1986 at SIO (WMO X85) 2nd generation Apr. 1991 at SIO (WMO X87) 3rd generation Oct. 1995 at SIO (WMO X95) Dec. 2003 at NOAA (WMO Mole Fraction) 4th generation Jan. 1999 at NOAA (WMO Mole Fraction) Sep. 2005 at NOAA (WMO X2005) 5th generation Jan. 2002 at NOAA (WMO Mole Fraction) Sep. 2008 at NOAA (WMO X2007) 6th generation Oct. 2006 at NOAA (WMO Mole Fraction) 7th generation Dec. 2010 at NOAA (WMO X2007) Information on intercomparison 1st WMO CO2 round robin 1991/1992 (WMO, CMDL: 1991-1992) Analysis date: Jun. 1992 Remark: WMO/GAW report No.88 2nd WMO CO2 round robin 1995/1997 (WMO, CMDL: 1995-1997) Analysis date: Jan. 1997 Remark: WMO/GAW report No.132 3rd WMO CO2 round robin 1999/2000 (WMO, CMDL: 1999-2000) Analysis date: Aug. 1999 Remark:https://www.data.jma.go.jp/gmd/wcc/co2/wmo_rr99.html 4th WMO CO2 round robin 2002/2007 (WMO, CMDL: 2002-2007) Analysis date: Jan. 2004 Remark: WMO/GAW report No.186 5th WMO CO2 round robin 2009/-(WMO, ESRL: ongoing) Analysis date: Jun. 2009 Calibration gases used: CO2 in air The calibration is carried out 1-hourly with 4 working standards. In case that sample gas ( CO2(sea))is out of calibration range (272-405 ppm), values are extrapolated. |

The measurements for air and surface sea water are carried out. The height of intake for air sample is 31 meters above sea surface. The depth of the intake for sea water sample is 11 meters below sea surface. The sea water is introduced into the equilibrator. Both ambient air and equilibrated air are dried using an electronic dehumidifier, perma-pure dryer and chemical desiccant (Mg(ClO4)2) at dew-point lowerthan 2°C, -40°C, -70°C respectivery. Continuous NDIR analyzer. |
