The observational site is located about 15 km east of Takayama City in a cool-temperate mountainous forest area in central part of the main island of Japan. The main tree species at the site are deciduous broad-leaf trees, such as birch and oak, with an average height of about 17 m. Ground surface is covered with bamboo grass. This forested area has been protected and undisturbed for the last about 50 years. Budding and defoliation occur in May and October respectively, and the ground surface is usually covered with snow from December to April. |
